The Discovery phase is used to gain clarity around the decision maker’s objectives
The Discovery phase is used to gain clarity around the decision maker’s objectives and ensure that everyone involved has a shared understanding of the situation. This is an opportunity to step back, look at the situation, determine what is happening, and clarify any ambiguous issues. Questions to be asked include:
- Who are the significant stakeholders?
- Who is the ultimate decision maker?
- What criteria will form the basis for the strategic decision?
- What is driving the need for a decision at this time?
- What can we do to clarify any ambiguities or misunderstandings?
- Is this opportunity attractive enough to continue to dedicate time and resources to it?
A commonly used tool during Discovery is the Objectives Hierarchy. This is a graphic display of the key objectives, showing the relationships and tradeoffs between them. It is an excellent way for different teams and disciplines within the organization to understand how their specific objectives fit in with the overall corporate goals.
